How much does it cost per week?
Prices vary by club and by membership option. Our clubs have many different membership options and additional classes and programs, so you can find that best membership type to suit you and your goals.
What is the Activation Kit and why do I need it?
All Fernwood members are given access to an exclusive online health, fitness and food hub, packed with online workout videos, exercises, yoga and Pilates sessions, meditations, hundreds of recipes and more. This provides our members with even more flexibility to continue their health and fitness journey.
The Activation Kit also includes a 24/7 club access key (at participating clubs), and complimentary cardio induction session, plus in-club and online support. New members are also guided through their first six weeks at Fernwood to ensure they are feeling comfortable and confident, including advice and tips on training, nutrition and wellbeing.
What facilities are available at Fernwood – group fitness classes, amenities, parking, childcare?
All the gym essentials are available: cardio and strength training equipment, group fitness classes and Personal Training. We also offer some Fernwood-specific services like our small group training program, FIIT30; Food Coaching; wellness programs and events; and online and in-club challenges. And don't forget about our special member perks such as free breakfast in the Members' Lounge, complimentary toiletries in the change rooms and the bi-monthly Fernwood magazine! Extra facilities like childcare, parking and beauty services vary from club to club, so we recommend contacting your local Fernwood for their complete list of services.
Are group fitness classes included in my membership?
Yes! You can attend our classes as often as you like.
What results will I achieve? How long will it take?
By exercising regularly and improving your eating habits, you can expect to increase your fitness, lose weight, gain strength and tone, boost your metabolism, improve digestion, sleep better and feel more energised! We know that starting a new health and fitness journey can be daunting, which is why we've created Your Fernwood, a 4-week exercise, nutrition and mindset program for every new member that will equip you with all the tips and tricks you need to kick-start your journey. If you have a specific goal in mind, we recommend chatting to your club staff about a tailored solution that will help you achieve the results you’re after.
Can I use other Fernwood clubs?
Yes! As part of your membership you have 24 reciprocal rights visits to use every 12 months. Once you join, your home club can explain how this works.
Once I sign up for a membership, is there a cooling off period for me to change my mind?
Yes. The cooling off period is 48 hours.
If I decide to, how do I cancel my membership and what are the costs to do this?
If you decide you no longer want to be a member at Fernwood, you can cancel at any time. You should notify your club as soon as possible, in writing, to begin the cancellation process. Cancellation conditions and fees will depend on the term of your membership.
What happens if I go on holiday or would like some time off from the gym?
Your membership can be put on hold for up to 8 weeks over a 12-month period. This deferral can be extended for overseas travel or medical reasons. A small weekly fee applies to do this - check with your club about their policies and prices.
What will my first few visits be like?
There's no need to feel apprehensive when you first step foot inside a Fernwood club. We’ll be there to guide you every step of the way during your first 28 days, both in club and online. As a new member, you’ll receive our new induction program, Your Fernwood, as part of your membership. The program will teach you everything you need to know about your new club, as well as tips and tricks on exercise, nutrition and mindset to set you up for success. So if you're a beginner, even better - we'll show you how to get it right from the start!
On your first visit, you'll meet with a Fitness Coach who will help you set some really solid goals and create an action plan for you to work towards. As you begin to get comfortable, start trying different group fitness classes and make sure you lock in your complimentary Personal Training and FIIT30 (small group training) sessions. After a few weeks, we guarantee you'll feel like a regular.
What do I wear?
It’s no fashion parade at Fernwood, you just need to make sure you're wearing something comfortable and breathable. A good fitting sports bra and pair of trainers are important too.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes. Working out with a friend is great motivation and helps keep you on track with your health and fitness goals - not to mention, it makes training way more fun! Chat to the reception staff at your local club to find out how you can get your friends and family involved.
What types of group fitness classes are offered and when are they?
Each club offers a different selection of group fitness classes, so it's best to give your local club a quick call or take a look at their online timetable. We recommend trying as many classes as you can to see which ones you like best. Whether you choose BodyPump, cycle, BodyStep, Zumba, boxing, Pilates, yoga or circuit classes, the group atmosphere, fun music and energy of the instructor will keep you motivated and get you moving on those days when you otherwise wouldn’t feel like it. Classes usually last from 30 minutes to an hour, so you can fit them into your day no matter how busy you are. You’ll burn calories and have a lot of fun while doing it!
How much does Personal Training cost?
Personal Training varies by club and by package, with prices starting from just $40 per week (on top of your membership fees).
What is Food Coaching and how much does it cost?
Whether your goal is to lose weight, build strength or improve your mental health, what you eat is just as important as how much you move. That's why we offer weekly one-on-one sessions with a specialised Food Coach to motivate our members and keep them accountable to their goals. A Food Coach will work with you on a personalised, scientifically-sound nutrition program based on the principles of the Mediterranean diet, which has been proven to support weight management and promote good mental health. Prices vary by club and by package, starting from just $19 extra per week. Some clubs will also offer Group Food Coaching sessions.
What is FIIT30 and how much does it cost?
FIIT30 is our small group training program that will help you get serious results in a seriously short time. Working in a group of 6-10 women, these 30-minute sessions use the principles of high intensity interval training and functional movement patterns to improve cardio fitness, strength, joint mobility and stability. Each session is taken by a qualified Personal Trainer. Prices vary by club and by package, starting from just $20 extra per week.
What is strength training?
Strength training refers to progressive overload of the muscles to increase strength and maintain lean muscle mass, at an intensity just outside your comfort zone. It is also sometimes called weight training or resistance training.
Will strength training make me 'bulk up'?
No, this is a common misconception that many women have about lifting weights. Put simply, women don't have enough testosterone (the male sex hormone) in their bodies to make them bulky, no matter how many times they hit the gym. Instead, strength training will help you get lean and toned - not to mention super strong!
Does strength training burn fat?
Strength training helps to maintain or increase your muscle mass, in turn elevating your metabolism and your capacity to burn fat - which will continue for hours after your workout.
Can I just do cardio exercise on its own?
The key component is intensity with strength training, as opposed to volume with cardio. Without the support of some strength-training sessions, cardio workouts will burn both fat and muscle. Reducing your muscle mass will not only weaken your bones but also slow your metabolism and body’s ability to burn fat, so make sure you’re mixing up your treadmill time with some strength sessions for optimal results.
How does strength training work?
Compound exercises with weights (using more than one joint at a time) ensure the best results in the shortest period of time. Strength training must be progressive, therefore we need to continue to increase the amount of weight we actually lift over a period of time to get results.
Is strength training just for young women?
Whether you're 18 or 80, there’s a strength training program for you. After all, if you don't use it, you lose it! Strength training is essential to keep your body functioning at its best and is recommended for women of all ages.
What are the benefits of strength training?
Aside from the physical benefits of being lean and toned, strength training can also help to improve posture; reduce the risk of osteoporosis, diabetes and heart disease; increase energy levels, core strength and bone mineral content; as well as strengthening the bones, ligaments and tendons, and reducing the risk of injury.
How often do I need to exercise?
You don't need to spend hours in the gym each day to see results – it's about quality over quantity. Aim for five 30-60 minute sessions per week incorporating a mix of strength, cardio and mind/body workouts. For instance, you might do a couple of group fitness classes, one or two FIIT30 sessions, and then round out your week with some yoga or gentle stretching. Rest days are also important to give your body a chance to recover and avoid burnout or injury. Your local club staff will be able to help you put together a weekly workout schedule tailored to your individual goals.

Don’t attempt to start strength training without proper advice from a professional who will also tailor a program to your individual needs.
